Infrared Sauna

Infrared sauna therapy uses gentle, penetrating heat to warm the body directly, rather than heating the surrounding air. This allows for a more comfortable experience while supporting several key physiological processes.

It is particularly beneficial for supporting fascia – the connective tissue network that surrounds muscles, organs, and joints. Fascia is highly responsive to temperature and hydration. Gentle heat has been shown to increase tissue extensibility and circulation, which may help fascia become more pliable and responsive to movement and manual work. This can be particularly supportive for individuals experiencing stiffness, persistent tension, or movement restrictions.

Infrared heat may also support:

  • Circulation and blood flow
  • Relaxation of the nervous system
  • Recovery following physical or postural work
  • The body’s natural detoxification pathways via sweating

When used alongside intentional movement, posture training, or manual therapies, infrared sauna can help create an internal environment that supports tissue adaptability and recovery.

Who infrared sauna may not be suitable for

Infrared sauna is generally well tolerated, however it is not appropriate for everyone. Certain conditions can alter how the body responds to heat and fluid shifts, so caution or medical guidance is important.

Infrared sauna may not be suitable, or may require clearance, for individuals who:

  • Are pregnant, unless specifically cleared by a healthcare provider
  • Have cardiovascular conditions, including uncontrolled high or low blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, or a history of fainting
  • Have difficulty regulating body temperature, such as conditions affecting heat tolerance or sweating
  • Are prone to dizziness or syncope, particularly when exposed to heat
  • Have kidney disease, where fluid and electrolyte balance is closely managed
  • Are acutely unwell, including fever, infection, vomiting, or diarrhoea
  • Have open wounds or active skin infections
  • Are severely dehydrated or have ongoing electrolyte imbalances
  • Are using medications that affect hydration, blood pressure, heart rate, or heat tolerance (e.g. some diuretics, blood pressure medications)

Individuals with chronic health conditions should seek medical advice before using infrared sauna, particularly if heat exposure has previously caused adverse symptoms.

Important note

Infrared sauna is best used as a supportive modality, not a replacement for medical care. Sessions should be kept within comfortable limits, hydration should be prioritised, and use should always be discontinued if light-headedness, nausea, or discomfort occurs.
